Ian Johnson of the Wall Street Journal, one of the most solid reporters working in China for the last decade and author of “Wild Grass” (a book which I reviewed in a Leiden journal here), published a wonderful piece on October 3, 2009:

And to think that sometimes I wonder why this giant slab of land along China’s northeastern flank remains a source of fascination and sustenance….
